Specimen labels can be done in several different ways. Historically, many were handwritten, used typewriters, or used copiers. Below are 4 different modern methods:

1. PLabel – this is a standalone program designed by Kent D. Perkins for the Windows operating system.

2. Mail Merge – using Microsoft Word, its mail merge function can create labels from data in a spreadsheet.

3. Symbiota – these databases that serve natural history data can be used to generate labels.

4. Word Processor – various programs can be used to type data directly into a formatted space for labels.
