The University of Florida Herbarium (FLAS) is within the top 100 herbarium collections in the world, preserving and cataloging more than half a million specimens. Researchers, scholars, educators and students pursuing careers across a variety of fields use these resources to better understand our natural world and find answers to tomorrow’s challenges.
Established in 1891, our herbarium is the oldest and most diverse collection of its kind in Florida. It houses collections from around the world, with a special focus on the southeastern United States and the Caribbean region. Thousands of botanists, naturalists, conservationists and citizen scientists have contributed specimens and data to create a catalogue of plant life that tells the story of our natural history.
We are proud to mentor University of Florida students earning degrees toward a variety of careers in research, education and conservation, as well as work with volunteer organizations like the Florida Master Gardener Program to foster a close connection to people involved with hobby gardening, agricultural improvements and wildlife ecosystems.
Supporting the Herbarium allows our staff and faculty to continue their research into plant biodiversity and ecological resilience, as well as expand the herbarium collections to document today’s environment for tomorrow’s scientists. Your support helps to fund travel and fieldwork for student research, student curatorial work in the herbarium, and outreach activities out in our community.
