A female, top, and juvenile, bottom, Dixie chub are pictured above. Collected from Santa Rosa County, Florida in 2015, they are now part of the Florida Museum ichthyology collection, UF 237803. Florida Museum photo by Zachary Randall

The Dixie chub is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family, and has a large black spot at the front of the dorsal fin base and another at the caudal fin base. It has a large terminal mouth, and a small flaplike barbel sits in a groove above – not in – the mouth’s corner. The lateral think is complete with between 45 and 52 pored scales. The Dixie chub can be found in sandy and gravelly pools of headwaters, creeks and small rivers.
