The blackmouth shiner is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family. This shiner has dark-edged scales on an otherwise light olive back, and on the upper side of their body. There is a pale stripe above a silver-black one that runs along the side of the body and continues around the snout and across the chin. This species has a strongly upturned mouth. Blackmouth shiners can be found in muddy backwaters and pools of creeks and small rivers, and usually live near vegetation.
