Taillight shiners are members of the minnow, shiner and chub family. They have a bold black spot at center of their caudal fin base, and bright red pigment between small black spots on the upper and lower edges of the caudal fin base. Taillight shiners have a subterminal mouth. This species can be found in swamps, ponds, lakes and pools and backwaters of small to large rivers.
