The flagfin shiner is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family, and has a yellow to red upper side and dusky olive-gold back. There is a broad blue-black stripe with vertical orange dashes present along the side, and the pelvic fins are yellow with a red-orange margin. This shiner can be found in vegetated areas and in sandy pools and runs of headwaters, creeks and small rivers.
