SLIPWARE, PISAN front view
Type Name: SLIPWARE, PISAN
Type Index: SLIPWARE
Production Origin: ITALY
Date Range: 1600-1650
Defining Attributes:

Paste is thin, compact, hard and dark red in color.

Surface is covered with slip in swirled, marbleized patterns. Bichrome marbleized examples are rust and yellow, and polychrome marbleized examples are rust, yellow, brown and sometimes green.

A lead glaze is applied over the slip decoration.

Vessel Forms: PLATE
Comments: The marbleized effect is achieved by coating the red body with a thin layer of white slip, or layers of white, brown and green slip. The vessel is then shaken ("joggling") causing the slip to swirl and produce a marbleized appearance.
