Paste is coarse with incomplete compaction and medium sand temper. It ranges in color from light to dark terra-cotta. Well-fired examples are buff-colored.

Exterior surfaces are poorly smoothed and unglazed. A “freckled” appearance created by the mineral temper, and a white firing effluvium may be present on the surface.

Vessel walls are heavy (usually greater than 10 mm in thickness) and forms are utilitarian.
