The species problem: Is it one butterfly species or two?

Presented by: Felix Sperling, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada

Abstract: Species are one of the most basic units of analysis in biology. Even so, there is surprisingly little agreement on exactly what that word means. I will highlight some of my lab’s studies on insects, particularly on conservation-relevant butterflies and Lepidoptera forestry pests, in which we address species delimitation problems that have long been considered a quagmire. We use genome-wide DNA markers to integrate genetic, morphological and ecological traits in species delimitation and identification. We apply the genomic integrity species concept, first to detect genomic clusters that maintain their integrity despite gene flow, then to calibrate and rank the genetic differences between populations that are not in contact.
