The UF Thompson Earth Systems Institute is hiring a Communications Manager to support our mission of advancing communication and education about Earth systems science in a way that inspires Floridians to be effective stewards of our planet. Our vision is to lead the way to a healthier planet by cultivating a responsible and curious society that values, trusts and has access to science. TESI is located within the Florida Museum of Natural History, but has robust partnerships across campus and the state. 

Reporting to the TESI director, the communications manager is primarily responsible for the development, management and implementation of all aspects of TESI communications, digital outreach, and public relations. The communications manager will be tasked with both communicating science effectively and promoting TESI’s events, impacts, and accomplishments to key audiences and stakeholders. 

Duties include: 

  • Lead the planning, development, and evaluation of content and media for internal and external publication and dissemination. This includes social media, press releases about Institute work, TESI website content, educational videos, Institute newsletters, annual reports, and more. 
  • Ensure TESI website is up-do-date with relevant news and information and follows accessibility guidelines. 
  • Serve as the final editor on all communications products to ensure content is error free and factual. 
  • Actively implement and promote the TESI brand and public image. Work with TESI team members to develop materials for cohesive branding and consistent messaging. 
  • Create, implement, and evaluate communications programs and campaigns that promote TESI’s mission. 
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the Institute’s annual communications plan, in line with TESI’s strategic plan. 
  • Respond in a timely manner to requests for information from the media. 
  • Work with other PR, marketing, and communications professionals in the Museum and at UF to optimize collaboration, activities, products, and impact. 
  • Collaborate with the FLMNH’s Office of Museum Technology, to maintain and develop social media accounts, including content creation, curation, and active dissemination.  
  • Assist with the development, promotion, and implementation of public outreach events. 
  • Collaboratively manage all aspects of the TESI Environmental Communicators Internship. This includes developing content calendars for students, providing day-to-day supervision of interns, providing hands on editing and mentorship to guide student work, and providing relevant professional development opportunities for interns. 
  • Provide supervision and mentorship to TESI graduate assistants.  
  • Assist with the development of grant proposals. 
  • Other duties as needed. 

Expected salary: $60,500-$65,000; Commensurate with education and experience

Minimum requirements: Master’s degree in a related area such as, but not limited to, communications, journalism, public relations, education, etc.; or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant area and 2 years of relevant experience. 

Preferred qualifications:

  • The communications manager will understand and/or have training in environmental science or topics. 
  • Previous experience communicating scientific concepts to broad audiences.  
  • Attention to detail and ability to produce work that is error free and factual. 
  • Proficiency with developing and managing social media.  
  • Experience in project management and coordination. Must be able to manage several projects at once with competing deadlines. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, WordPress, or other online content management systems. 
  • Experience working with undergraduate students as a mentor or supervisor. 
  • Proficiency with digital photography and videography and photo/video editing. 
  • Must be proficient in the English language with excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels.
