Managing our fish and wildlife resources

fwc logoThe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is responsible for managing our fish and wildlife resources, balancing the species’ needs with our human needs. The executive director of FWC is Eric Sutton, who has been in the position since 2017.

The FWC protects and manages:

  • More than 575 species of wildlife
  • More than 200 native species of freshwater fish.
  • More than 500 native species of saltwater fish.

What can FWC help me with?

Like the DEP, the FWC is comprised of several divisions.

  • Freshwater Fisheries Management – Provides expertise on all aspects of freshwater fisheries and assesses the impacts of decisions made by others to ensure quality fisheries and fishing. Biologists with this division are the first line of support for information on freshwater fisheries management issues, fishing opportunities, fish pond management and fish kills.
  • Habitat and Species Conservation – Integrates scientific data with applied habitat and species management to maintain fish and wildlife populations.
  • Hunting and Game Management – Manages and conserves game wildlife for the future, while fostering safe and responsible hunting.
  • Law Enforcement – Enforces state and federal environmental laws.
  • Marine Fisheries Management – Develops regulatory and management recommendations designed to ensure the long-term conservation of Florida’s valuable marine fisheries resources. Division staff work with federal agencies on marine issues.
  • The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute –Conducts research programs that focus on obtaining data and information needed by natural resource managers and stakeholders.
