This exhibit was on display May 18, 2019, through January 5, 2020

We got to see the result of 200 million years of predatory evolution and learn about one of nature’s oldest and stealthiest hunters: crocodilians!

Our visitors learned about the history and significance of these creatures from both live reptiles and realistic models. They also got to test their strength against a crocodile’s bite and see how they use sound waves to make water dance at many interactive stations—NOT with our resident crocs, of course!

A favorite photo op was the life-size model of Gomek, the largest crocodile ever exhibited in North America, and read about how he became a symbol of crocodile conservation. A “digital curator” revealed the behavior and intricate social lives of these animals.

As a bonus, we featured alligator fossils found at our Montbrook dig site in nearby Levy County, Florida, and the skull of one of the University of Florida’s last live mascots.

Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World was created by Peeling Productions at Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland and sponsored in part by contributions from Visit Gainesville/Alachua County, University of Florida Student Government and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.
