fossil dig covered in water

This summer’s exceptionally high rainfall raised local water tables at the Montbrook site and submerged the fossil-producing layers! This is the Montbrook site in late September 2021. The fossil producing layers remain submerged as of late November 2021.

Because we cannot dig at Montbrook until the water levels go down (hopefully in January 2022), we are returning to an old favorite, Thomas Farm. The Thomas Farm dig is located in rural Gilchrist County, about an hour’s drive from Gainesville. This will be the first time we have done an extensive excavation at Thomas Farm since 2015.

This short dig will run from December 12 to December 20, 2021.

About Thomas Farm

Thomas Farm is one of the most important vertebrate fossil sites in Florida. Fossils were discovered here in 1931 and the land was later deeded to the University of Florida. Researchers, students and volunteers have been working this site for decades and the Museum is home to many of the fossils identified from this site. New species continue to be found and described from Thomas Farm on a regular basis. Read more about Thomas Farm
