Calling all art enthusiasts! Do you enjoy painting, drawing, sculpting or are you just art-curious? Offered in partnership with Santa Fe College Art Gallery and Wayfaring Painter, visit the Florida Museum for after-hours SciArt Meetups and create art inspired by Florida nature and culture!

Maria Sibylla MerianIn honor of Women’s History Month, come learn about influential female scientific illustrators throughout history and create artwork inspired by 17th-century artist and naturalist, Maria Sibylla Merian. Discover the beauty of careful observation using the Museum’s plant and insect specimens, microscopes and magnifying glasses!

Meetup Topic: Women Scientific Illustrators

Guest Speaker:
Neil Weijer, curator of the Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection at UF’s George A. Smathers Libraries. Hear his talk “Drawn to Life: Women in Natural History from Merian to Margaret Mee and discover why many women illustrators are not credited for their work, see artifacts from the libraries and learn how to utilize digital collections.

Price:
$7 per person

Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. Participants must be 18 years or older.

Access includes:

  • Presentation by a special guest speaker.
  • A working studio space during the event.
  • A project demonstration by Wayfaring Painter. NOTE: Supplies are provided for the project, but artists are encouraged to bring their own materials to be used during the free time.
  • After-hours entry to all permanent exhibits with the exception of the Butterfly Rainforest, Discovery Zone and Amazing Pollinators exhibits, which will be closed.
