Teacher Workshop on Modeling Human Behavior in Climate Disasters Using Artificial Intelligence

Attention High School Teachers!
The Scientist in Every Florida School program and the Smart, Effective, and Resilient Mobility Systems (SERMOS) Lab at the Unversity of Florida are partnering for a 2-day professional development and curriculum writing workshop entitled, Modeling Human Behavior in Climate Disasters Using Artificial Intelligence. Two high school teachers will work closely with the scientists from the SERMOS lab to develop three lessons for teaching in the classroom:
- Lesson One: Foundational knowledge of AI related to emergency management challenges
- Lesson Two: Hands-on data collection using AI for hurricane evacuation
- Lesson Three: Analyze data gathered and annotated by students and AI model performance
WORKSHOP BENEFITS:
- Develop hands-on activities and lessons for your classroom.
- Gain content expertise in AI and natural disasters.
WORKSHOP ELIGIBILITY:
- Must be a Florida high school teacher in the public school system (grades 9-12) in the upcoming school year.
- Must be able to attend and actively participate in the 2-day teacher workshop.
- Must commit to piloting the three lessons in the upcoming school year and provide feedback to the team.
- Must complete workshop survey and evaluation instruments.
- Must commit to a SEFS scientist interaction in the classroom in the upcoming school year.
PARTICIPANT SUPPORT:
Participants will receive a $1,000 stipend upon successful completion of the PD, evaluation, and lesson implementation. Teachers will be housed (single occupancy) at the Reitz Union Hotel, courtesy of the workshop.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
The application deadline to apply is April 15, 2026. Space is limited to two high school teachers. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application (selected or not) by April 30, 2026.
