Topic: Secrets of Sargassum

Speaker: Brian Lapointe, Research Professor- Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University

Dr. Lapointe’s research interests include biological oceanography, algal physiology and biochemistry, seagrass and coral reef ecology, marine pollution and remote sensing. He has extensive experience in water quality research in South Florida, particularly the Florida Keys, and the Caribbean and is internationally recognized for his work. Dr. Lapointe developed the first “ridge-to-reef” water quality monitoring program for the European Union in Jamaica, a model that has been adopted by Marine Protected Areas around the Caribbean. He has advised the US EPA, NOAA, State of Florida and governments of Monroe, Palm Beach and Lee Counties, Bahamas, Tobago, Turks & Caicos, Jamaica, Bonaire, Curacao, Martinique and St. Lucia on development of water quality monitoring programs to assess the impacts of land-based pollution. Brian obtained a BS in Biology from Boston University, a MS in Environmental Science from the University of Florida and a PhD in Biology from the University of South Florida.
