Teacher Workshop on Experimental Design Using Robotic Swimmers: Exploring the Scientific Method

Attention Elementary School Teachers!
Are you a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade teacher looking for a professional development experience that bridges many scientific disciplines but with emphasis on the process of experimental design and the scientific method? We invite you to apply and be part of our professional development program entitled, “Experimental Design Using Robotic Swimmers: Exploring the Scientific Method.” Participants will attend a 2-day professional development workshop on the renowned University of Florida main campus in Gainesville.
During the workshop, participants will hear from content experts and work with a team of scientists using robotic swimmer materials to develop lessons and activities to teach the integral concepts around the nature, process, and tools of doing science. Additionally, teachers will learn about real-world applications happening in this area of research.
Workshop Benefits:
- Develop hands-on activities and lessons for your classroom pertaining to experimental design and the scientific process.
- Gain content expertise that is sure to get your students excited and expose them to STEM topics.
- Work with your teacher cohort and scientists throughout the year to implement activities with your learning kits.
Workshop Eligibility:
- Must be a public-school elementary school teacher (grades 3-5) in the upcoming school year within the state of Florida.
- Teachers who teach at schools that receive Title I funds are especially encouraged to apply.
- Must plan to continue teaching at a public school for the 2026-2027 school year.
- Must be able to attend and actively participate in the 2-day teacher workshop.
- Must commit to piloting learning kit activity or lesson in the 2026-2027 school year and provide feedback.
- Must be enthusiastic to learn!
Participant Support:
Participants will receive a $400 stipend upon successful completion of the PD, evaluation, and scientist classroom visit as mentioned above. Teachers will be responsible for any travel and accommodations needed. A detailed agenda will be provided to participants prior to travel.

Application Process:
The deadline to apply is April 15, 2026. To allow for maximal collaboration, we are limiting this workshop to 3 elementary school teachers. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application (selected or not) by the end of April 2026.
