By April Carr | Assistant Intern Supervisor

I grew up on the southern California coast before moving North to Rapid City, South Dakota where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Paleontology from the same institution. My research focus has been on mammals from the Miocene Epoch and I was very excited to come to Panama to study the mammals here from that time.

Living in Panama has been a real blast! Learning about the culture and practicing my Spanish has been a very rewarding experience. I also enjoy visiting Panama’s beautiful beaches which make me nostalgic for my surfing days growing up in California. I hope to explore more of Panama’s beaches and other natural wonders in the remaining months I am here.

By far though, the best experience I’ve had as an intern on the PCP-PIRE project has been working alongside the other interns and post-docs here at STRI Center for Tropical Paleoecology and Archeology-CTPA. Seeing the diverse array of expertise and projects, and talking with the other researchers here from a wide range of backgrounds I feel has been a great experience for me.

April Carr is part of the four interns that joined PCP-PIRE during the Spring Semester. Other interns are Brittany Newstead, Katy Cummings and Stephanie Lukowski.
