Large and robust teeth with slanted crowns; distal edge has a pronounced notch; the teeth have coarser serrations on the heel and base; U-shaped root.

Size: 5-20 mm.

Ecology: inhabits tropical and warm-temperate nearshore to offshore waters (0-140 m), feeding on crustaceans, fish, seals, birds, squid, turtles, and sea snakes to dolphins and other smaller sharks; known to reach 7 m in length.

Geological range: Miocene-Recent.

Geographic distribution: Cosmopolitan distribution (present day); fossil record in the Caribbean.
