Talk at the Thomas Farm fossil dig

Aldo Rincon gave a report on “New Early Miocene Vertebrate Fossils from Panama” at the Hummingbird Challenge VII at Thomas Farm on April 1. The Hummingbird Challenge is an annual fossil dig sponsored by the Florida Museum of Natural History. Volunteers from around the U.S. (and sometimes from around the world) gather at the 18-million-year-old Thomas Farm locality to help scientists find fossils and learn about current research led by museum scientists.

Fossils exhibition at “Can you dig it?”

Alex Hastings, Aldo Rincon, Carly Manz, and Luz Helena Oviedo participated in this April 16 event at the Florida Museum of Natural History organized by the UF Department of Geological Science and the Gainesville Gem and Mineral Society. The general public enjoyed looking at and learning from Floridian and Panamanian fossils.

Talk at the University of Panama

Approximately 80 students from the University of Panama attended a talk given by Catalina Pimiento on May 1st. The seminar focused on the PCP-PIRE and Catalina’s research on Megalodon.

Talk at the Southwest Florida Fossil Club

Fossil lovers and members of the Southwest Florida Fossil Club enjoyed a talk on Panama Canal fossils by Aldo Rincon on May 14th. He gave a presentation about the paleontological work in Panama including his research and findings on early Miocene camels. Aldo is the recipient of the 2011 Mitchell Hope Vertebrate Scholarship presented by the fossil club as a result of the talk.

Presentation at the Calvert Marine Museum

Catalina Pimiento gave a talk at Maryland’s Calvert Marine Museum on May 21st. The presentation to the museum’s fossil club was titled “Giant Shark Babies from Panama.” This lecture was part of the museum’s PEM Talks series on Paleontology, the Environment, and Maritime History and it was funded by the University of Florida and the Clarissa and Lincoln Dryden Endowment for Paleontology at the Calvert Marine Museum.

“Paleontology in Panama” by Carlos Jaramillo

Carlos Jaramillo gave the talk “Paleontology in Panama” on June 22. This talk was part of the “Centennial talks” at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) as part of its celebration of a hundred years of work in Panama.

Central America Visitor Centers Network visits Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

On July 16, members of the Central America Visitor Centers Network visited the facilities of the Center of Tropical Paleoecology and Archaeology at STRI to learn about research conducted there. Catalina Pimiento, PCP PIRE PhD student, toured them through the facility and spoke with scientists, students and interns about their studies.

Several members of the CAVCN have expressed interest in working with CTPA and the PCP PIRE as a result of this visit. Ana Rosa Caballero, who is interested in palynology (the study of pollen), will start volunteering at CAVCN very soon. Members of the Museo del Canal Interoceánico have also asked about collaborating.

Megalodon at STRI Centennial Talk

Catalina Pimiento will participate at the Centennial Talk in the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute on August 24th. The talk-entitled “Megalodon, y otros tiburones ancestrales de Panamá”- will target the general public in Panama.
