The Florida Program for Shark Research (FPSR) internship opportunities vary year to year depending on the status of current projects. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the FPSR for information on current openings. Generally, internships at the FPSR are unpaid as these opportunities are provided to enhance students' education in the field of shark biology. Applicants are asked to work a regular schedule and dedicate at least two months of their time to the internship to be considered. Internships typically involve work with one of the following databases:
International Sawfish Encounter Database
ISED technicians assist with the maintenance and development of the ISED and related sawfish education and outreach initiatives. The successful applicant will assist in maintaining the database using Microsoft Access and Excel by searching and entering recent sawfish encounters as well as historic encounters documented in news articles and other media. The intern may also be asked to help with the development of outreach materials including a Public Service Announcement (PSA) and brochures as well as distributing materials to encounter reporters and interested organizations. Other responsibilities may include interviewing encounter reporters, contacting organizations to distribute outreach materials and searching online for encounters and sawfish-related products for sale. International Shark Attack Files
ISAF technicians assist with the maintenance and development of the ISAF’s geographical data. The ISAF is a compilation of all known shark attacks worldwide that is administered through the auspices of the American Elasmobranch Society, an international organization of leading shark research scientists, and the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida. The purpose of the File is to synthesize information surrounding shark attacks, allowing researchers and physicians to gain scientific insight into this phenomenon. More information on the ISAF
