The Ordway Lab believes strongly in the importance of offering science education and environmental outreach events to local communities at field research sites. Ian and Felicity recently completed two such workshops for primary school students in the small communities of San Lorenzo and Ocol in Amazonas, Peru. Both communities lie near huge tracts of intact cloud forest that harbor several emblematic bird species endemic to northern Peru. San Lorenzo is particularly known among bird watchers as the only place in the world to reliably see the Pale-billed Antpitta. Children learned about their backyard birds, completed activities about bird ecology, and were introduced to binoculars and birdwatching.
