Construction is progressing steadily on the expansion of Powell Hall and the addition of the University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute’s building. Both projects are beginning to take shape, marking an exciting new chapter for the Florida Museum and its visitors.
Here are some highlights from the past few months:
Demolition to the front of the building was completed in August, followed by site preparation that included filling and compacting the area for the new foundation. During excavation, crews were surprised to uncover the remnants of an amphitheater beneath the site.

Because the structure was located directly in the construction zone, it had to be carefully excavated and filled in before work could continue. Since then, the construction crew has also completed trenching and the first stage of plumbing for restrooms and other essential utilities as part of the building’s foundational work. Additionally, the roadway was compacted in preparation for paving prior to the placement of new asphalt. Inside the building, renovations are being made to the lobby and Collectors Shop to ensure a warm and inviting welcome for guests when the doors reopen in 2026.
The expansion behind the exhibits building is also seeing significant progress. Structural framing and decking have now been partially completed, in addition to pouring concrete slab floors in certain areas. Crews have also completed fill and concrete work for vertical supports, roof drains and plumbing lines.
As construction continues, we are excited to see these important additions come to life. The expanded Powell Hall entrance and the new building for the Thompson Earth Systems Institute will offer enhanced spaces for learning, exploration and community engagement. We look forward to sharing more updates as the project advances and in anticipation of welcoming back visitors to these inspiring new facilities.
