SPNHC TRAVEL GRANTS PROGRAM

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) has a Travel Grant program designed to assist Society members with the costs of attending the Society’s annual meeting. Grants will be available for attendance at the 2015 meeting of the Society in Gainesville, Florida, USA, May 17-23, 2015. SPNHC is pleased to announce The Fitzgerald and The Christine Allen Travel Grants to assist members with the costs of attending the Society’s 30th annual meeting.

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) is a global organization composed of a lively, active, and interdisciplinary community of professionals dedicated to the care of natural science collections. SPNHC members are museum specialists; such as curators, collections managers, conservators, preparators, and database administrators, from more than 20 countries. The Society holds annual meetings and sponsors symposia and workshops to foster the exchange of ideas and information. To learn more about SPNHC please visit www.spnhc.org.

THE FITZGERALD TRAVEL GRANT

A total of $3,000 is allocated to the program and grants will be for a minimum of $750 (USD) each. Please read carefully below.

THE CHRISTINE ALLEN TRAVEL GRANT

This is a single grant of $750 (USD).  Please read carefully below.

 


General Information for both The Fitzgerald and Christine Allen Travel Grants:

  • The application deadline for both grants is February 15, 2015.

  • Applicants should be members of the Society.  SPNHC Membership Application.  To become a SPNHC member, please visit http://www.spnhc.org/13/become-a-member.  Scroll down to the bottom of the SPNHC webpage, and click on the link, Join SPNHC Today. Please email or mail the application to the appropriate address listed on the bottom of the membership application form.

  • The SPNHC 2015 Meeting Local Organizing Committee will review the grant applications and select recipients. Successful applicants will be notified by March 4, 2015. If you find that you are not able to attend the SPNHC annual meeting, please notify the local organizing committee as soon as possible to ensure that the grant can be awarded to another deserving applicant.

  • Mentors are provided for each successful applicant for the duration of the meeting as well as assistance before and after the meeting with attendance planning, abstract and oral or poster presentation, submission for publication etc.

***Annual Fitzgerald Travel Grants***

Applicants and Awardees’ Requirements -

Applicants should be members of the Society. Preference will be given to graduate students or emerging professionals in fields related to the management and conservation of natural history collections. Applicants from the institution(s) hosting the meeting will not be eligible.

Awardees are required to make either an oral or poster presentation at the meeting and to be first author on the presentation. Receipt of the grant is contingent on the acceptance of the applicant’s abstract by the local organizing committee. Conditions of the grant require that successful applicants will also produce a short article (1,000 words) based on their presentation/poster for publication in the SPNHC newsletter, SPNHC Connection, or publish their work in Collection Forum.

Travel Grant Application

Applicants should submit the following:

  • A completed application form [Download Fitzgerald Application Form].
  • A letter of support/recommendation from the applicant’s advisor, supervisor, or professional mentor.
  • A statement (maximum 350 words) from the applicant describing how attendance at the meeting will benefit him/her.
  • An abstract for the paper/poster the applicant intends to present.
  • An estimate of the total costs for travel and accommodation.

Application Submission, Deadline, and Review Process -

These documents should be emailed or mailed to the SPNHC 2015 Meeting Local Organizing Committee clearly indicating that the application is for the Fitzgerald Travel Grant. (Email and snail mail addresses are provided on the application form.  Applicant must provide three [3] copies if the application is sent by snail mail.) The deadline for applications is February 15, 2015. The SPNHC 2015 Meeting Local Organizing Committee will review the grant applications and select recipients. Successful applicants will be notified by March 4, 2015. If you find that you are not able to attend the SPNHC annual meeting, please notify the local organizing committee as soon as possible to ensure that the grant can be awarded to another deserving applicant.

 

***Annual Christine Allen Travel Grant***

The Christine Allen Travel Grant is in memory of Christine Allen, who worked for University Products, Gaylord Brothers and Hollinger Metal Edge during her long career in museum support. She was a long time member and supporter of the Society and worked tirelessly with many of us to ensure that the products marketed by her companies reflected the needs articulated by the SPNHC membership. The grant is funded by her three former employers. A single grant of $750 will be available for attendance at the 2015 meeting of the Society in Gainesville, Florida, USA.
