Sandy roadside edge of a pine plantation (ex flatwoods), with Pinus palustris, P. elliottii, Lyonia fruticosa, Vaccinium myrsinites, Gaylussacia dumosa, Serenoa repens, Asimina pygmaea, Deeringothamnus rugelii, Gordonia lasiantha, Ilex cassine, I. glabra; open (recently cut), wetter powerline right-of-way also with Polygala nana, P. lutea, Pterocaulon pycnostachyum, Pteridium aquilinum, Erigeron quercifolius, Hypericum tetrapetalum, Aster reticulatus, Aletris, Aristida spiciformis, Hypoxis juncea, Buchnera americana, Lilium, Spiranthes, Lachnocaulon anceps, Eriocaulon decangulare, Syngonanthus flavidulus, Scleria. Shrub to ca 1 m tall; flowers pendent, outer petals white, greenish at base (especially externally, where often also with rusty brownish hairs), inner petals with reddish corrugations at inner base; common.
