The Florida Museum of Natural History’s Randell Research Center and the Tribby Arts Center at Shell Point are pleased to offer an interesting and fun lecture series called “The Archaeology, History, and Resilience of southwest Florida” in early 2025. We will welcome experts on the region’s Indigenous and historic maritime heritage and explore how archaeology and history are relevant to our coastal lifeways and resilience today!  All are welcome and audience members will have the opportunity to meet the speakers after the lectures.

Saturday, January 18th at 11am

Dr. Isabelle Holland-Lulewicz (Assistant Professor, The Pennsylvania State University) gives a talk entitled, “The Calusa, The Sea, and The Fisher Cities of Southwestern Florida.”

Presenting the latest in Calusa archaeology from around Estero Bay and Pine Island Sound, this talk brings together our current understandings of the historical trajectory of Indigenous Calusa communities, their complexities, and how they navigated their dynamic local ecosystems, particularly at the large urban towns of Mound Key and Pineland hundreds of years ago.

This event is free and open to the public.
