Most of us are familiar with Windows updates, both at home and work. Microsoft releases what is known as “quality updates” once per month, and sometimes more often. These are typically security fixes for Windows and other Microsoft products.

A feature update consists of upgrading Windows 10 to the latest version with enhanced features and security improvements. Feature updates are installed in a phased approach that requires multiple reboots to complete.

Microsoft has implemented these Feature updates as a required part of Windows maintenance. OMT will be releasing Feature updates roughly twice a year. As with our regular monthly updates, we will notify all Museum computer users in advance, giving them up to week to install them at their convenience, or defer the installation until the end of the 7 day period, at which time the updates will install automatically.

For your convenience, below is a reminder of what to expect when updates have been released.

When updates are ready for your computer, you will be prompted with a notification in the bottom right-hand corner of your display:

Software changes are required by your IT department.

You will have a few options for scheduling and snoozing the updates:

Required software changes will be applied to your computer

You can use the FLMNH Software Center icon on your desktop to check on the progress of the updates:

When a reboot is required, you will be prompted:

Your computer is about to restart

OMT thanks everyone in advance for their cooperation with keeping the Museum network secure, stable, updated, and in compliance with UF computing policies and industry best practices. Please be aware that Windows feature updates may take significantly more time than the regular monthly quality updates to which most users are accustomed. For this reason, OMT suggests everyone use the “Software changes are required” prompt to schedule the update to minimize work disruption, such as at the end of a work day. OMT will announce in advance when feature updates will be released.
