
The inaugural Global Butterfly Week successfully united thousands of butterfly watchers, educators, and field researchers to create the first single-window global census of butterfly diversity. Spanning the course of May 30 to June 7, 2026, this international campaign turned backyards, local parks, and remote biological reserves into data collection stations. For institutions like the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum, this global wave of community science and engagement acts as a vital step forward in conservation, while advancing research efforts.

Butterflies are incredibly visible and charismatic, making them among the most important flagship groups for monitoring ecosystem health. Despite their prominence, global butterfly monitoring efforts have historically been highly uneven. While parts of North America and Europe feature robust monitoring networks, the hyper-diverse tropics, which harbor roughly two-thirds of all butterfly species, remain vastly underrepresented. The stakes for tracking these species could not be higher; long-term studies show alarming population drops, including a 22 percent decline in U.S. butterfly abundance over a recent twenty-year span. Co-led by organizations like eButterfly and Fundación Alas y Antenas, Global Butterfly Week addressed this data gap directly, providing countless links, resources, activities, and webpages that allowed participants on every continent to record and share what they observed.

During the week, nature lovers around the world uploaded thousands of photo submissions onto platforms like the iNaturalist Global Butterfly Week 2026 Project and eButterfly. From neighborhood gardens in Florida to tropical rainforests in the southern Amazon, every geotagged photo establishes a data point of where a species is surviving, what it may be eating, and how factors in its environment may be influencing its habits. Moreover, this large-scale collaboration is a result of the efforts of numerous individuals (28,484 on iNaturalist, to be exact) from around the globe. Such rapid data collection yields immediate benefits for global researchers that cannot be everywhere at once, with the week culminating in 88,992 observations of 3,041 species on iNaturalist alone.


At the McGuire Center, we manage one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing Lepidoptera research collections. However, the future of conservation relies heavily on bridging physical collections data with digital data. Our researchers employ community science submissions for their real-world conservation projects. For instance, the Shirey Lab pairs physical specimen data with live images using AI and computer modeling to map international distributions. This technology allows them to quickly identify species facing immediate threats. The data collected help our staff and students in the Daniels Lab understand broader climate and habitat shifts as they work to protect species like the endangered Schaus’ Swallowtail in the Keys or the Frosted Elfin in North Florida.

Global Butterfly Week demonstrated that public observation can dramatically expand our understanding of biodiversity. While the official week has concluded, the work of documenting our changing ecosystems continues every day.
