DESCRIPTION:Celebrate ‘International Women and Girls in Science Day’ with hands-on activities and experiments during this FREE program open to everyone. \nIn 2015\, the United Nations selected Feb. 11 as ‘International Women and Girls in Science Day‘ in order to encourage more female participation in science. Join us for a day full of activities and conversation with a variety of scientists! \nWhile the event activities are FREE\, there is an admission charge for the Butterfly Rainforest exhibit. \nActivities\nMeet local scientists and do fun activities throughout the afternoon. \n\n	\n\n	\n	\n		\n			\n			2025 Activities		\n	 \n	\n	\n		 \n\nUF Howard T. Odum Center for Wetlands– Learn how wetlands trap and filter pollutants from reaching rivers and lakes with a fun\, hands-on activity.\nDaniels and Kawahara Labs– See drawers of Lepidoptera and other insects from the museum’s collection\nSystematics of Neotropical Butterflies Lab– Learn how butterflies are trapped and their specimens are prepared and imaged.\nScheffers Lab– Learn about microclimates and how important they are for plants and animals in tropical rainforests.\nUF Thompson Earth Systems Institute– Take a quiz and see how well you know the Sunshine State!\nBlackburn Lab– Learn about amphibian and reptile research in the Florida Museum of Natural History specimens\, 3D prints\, images and a coloring activity.\nFlorida Museum South Florida Archaeology and Ethnography Program– Sort through bones\, shells and pottery and learn about data analysis with archeological oysters.\nUF Aquatic Animal Health Program– Learn about Florida marine life like right whales\, sea turtles\, dolphins and manatees.\nSoltis Lab– Dive into DNA extraction with strawberries.\nFlorida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services– Interact with live air potato beetles and take part in a snail slime sensory experience!\nYan Lab– Check out live ant colonies and make your own insect aspirator.\nAlachua County Environmental Protection Department– Discover the role aquatic invertebrates have in our water with an interactive activity\, specimens\, coloring sheets and more.\nAssociation of Women Geoscientists– A rock\, mineral and fossil showcase will give you a chance to look at real geologic samples with hand lenses.\nUF Department of Linguistics– Look at your eye-movements and learn how you brain reads words in different languages.\nNorth Central Florida Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience– Make neurons out of pipe cleaners\, check out real brains and use “drunk” goggles to learn how it impacts hand-eye coordination.\nUF Society of Physics Students– Check out demonstrations on mechanics and electromagnetism.\nSanta Fe College Teaching Zoo– Take part in an interactive activity and learn more about community science.\nSemiconductor Career Readiness Organization at UF– View silicon chips under a microscope.\n\n	\n\n\nGirls Do Science Online\nCelebrate women and girls in science all year!
