What is a BioBlitz and what does it have to do with iNaturalist?
A BioBlitz is an intensive, time-limited survey of all living organisms within a designated area. Scientists, students, and community members collaborate to identify and document species using citizen science tools, most often, iNaturalist. These events provide a snapshot of biodiversity at a given time and place, helping researchers detect seasonal changes, track species distributions, and understand ecological interactions.
Beyond scientific contributions, BioBlitz events also serve as educational and community-building experiences. They offer participants the chance to learn from experts, develop species identification skills, and connect with others who share an interest in conservation. The data collected can influence environmental policy, inform land management decisions, and even lead to the discovery of species previously unrecorded in a particular area.
iNaturalist is a free, community-driven app that allows users to record biodiversity observations. By taking and uploading photos of plants, animals, and fungi, participants contribute valuable data to global biodiversity research. Observations are verified by experts and become part of a large-scale effort to track species distributions and changes over time. This collaborative approach ensures high-quality data that can be used by researchers and conservation organizations worldwide.
In addition to acting as a data collection tool, iNaturalist fosters learning and engagement by providing identification suggestions and access to a global network of naturalists and scientists. Participants can discuss observations, ask for help with species identification, and gain insights into the natural world from a diverse community of experts.
Watch this series from iNaturalist to learn how to use iNaturalist effectively. This tutorial will guide you through downloading the app, taking quality photos, and submitting your observations.
Why it matters
Recording species helps scientists and conservationists understand an area’s biodiversity. This data can inform land management decisions, track species population trends, and even aid in the discovery of new species. Each observation provides valuable information on species’ presence, habitat preferences, and migration patterns.
BioBlitz events empower the public to become active participants in scientific research. By contributing data, participants help build a comprehensive inventory of local biodiversity and support conservation initiatives.
What you can do
Up for a friendly challenge? If so, you can join the UF IFAS for the Fourth Annual DeLuca BioBlitz day and help document as many species as possible! The event is on March 7th, 2025, from 7AM – 5PM at the DeLuca Preserve in Okeechobee, FL. You can register and find out more details here.
On another note, to make the most of your BioBlitz experience, be sure to:
- Download iNaturalist on your phone before arriving.
- Bring a camera or smartphone to capture observations.
- Pack water and sunblock to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
- Wear appropriate clothing and boots for walking in diverse habitats.
- Bring food if you plan to stay all day—we want you to stay energized and healthy!
Join us for a day of exploration, discovery, and scientific contribution. This will be a great chance to interact with experts in various fields, find a community of individuals helping to create an environmentally friendly Earth, and see a new place that is normally closed to the public!
See you at the DeLuca BioBlitz 2025!
