The weed shiner is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family, and has a black stripe along the side of the body from the snout to the caudal fin. Weed shiners have a crosshatched appearance on the lower side of their bodies, and between three and four posterior anal fins that are lined with black. They can be found in sandy runs and pools of creeks and in small to medium rivers.
