Rough shiners are members of the minnow, shiner and chub family. They are red-brown on their backs and upper sides, and their side bodies are uniformly dark from the tip of the lower jaw to their caudal fin base. Rough shiners can be found in sand-and-gravel bottomed runs and pools of creeks and small rivers.
