The pinfish is a member of the porgy family. It has a laterally compressed oval body, a steeply sloped dorsal head profile and a moderately large eye shape. There is a large humeral spot bisected by the lateral line, and a median brassy-yellow band is present in the anal fin. There are six broad dark bars, the first passing through the humeral spot and the last on the caudal penduncle. The pinfish is a marine species that enters tidally influenced rivers, nearshore ditches, canals and lakes.
