The blacktip shiner is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family. It has black shading near the margins of the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins and extremely small scales on the nape. This shiner has dusky black coloration on the lips and chin and a dark stripe along the side of the body. It can be found in sand and gravel bottom pools of headwaters, creeks and small rivers.
