The black madtom is a member of the North American catfish family. It is stout-bodied and uniformly black or dark blue on the back and side of the body, and has many small, dark brown spots. The caudal fin is straight or only slightly rounded. Black madtoms live near vegetation and woody debris in creeks and small rivers
