The bandfin shiner is part of the minnow, shiner and chub family. Juveniles have bold red-orange coloration on the dorsal fins, and adult bandfin shiners typically have black bands on their dorsal fins. A large black spot on caudal fin base is also common in adults. This species has a large mouth that is oblique and terminal.
