The Apalachee shiner pictured above was collected in Liberty County, Florida in 2014. It is now part of the Florida Museum ichthyology collection, UF 187797. Florida Museum photo by Zachary Randall

The Apalachee shiner is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family, and has a deep, compressed body. A pink-red line sits above a broad steel-blue stripe along the side of the body and continues to a black oval at the caudal fin base. There is a yellow margin on large males that also reaches to the caudal fin. The Apalachee shiner can be found in vegetated areas and near woody debris in sandy and muddy pools and runs of headwaters, creeks and small to medium rivers.
