100 Years of Loss
The Museum’s collections contain many examples of extinct species. Those shown here vanished in roughly the last 100 years. These specimens help us to understand the past and allow us to ask new questions about biodiversity’s changing landscape. Because these species no longer exist in the wild, museums are the only place to find information to answer these new questions. These precious records of lost biodiversity are rarely displayed, and are somber reminders of today’s conservation challenges.
